Melling family photograph, Wigan, no date. William (Bill) Melling is with his grandfather James Holding, ladder maker, at Haigh Foundry. James Holding produced ladders for many local trades, including window cleaners, and constructed a special extension ladder for Haigh Hall at the start of the Second World War to access the roof in case of incendiary bombing raids.
